Screening our film Holding up the Sky deep in the rainforest before an audience of about 300 Yanomami, was an unforgettable experience!
At the beginning of our collaboration with the Yanomami, we made a promise to bring the film back to the Yanomami people. That’s what we just did now. It was undoubtedly the most important screening of the film of all, and getting applause for it was the most wonderful recognition!
The Yanomami organization Hutukara vigorously opposes the pollution and destruction of their habitat and seeks to protect the rainforest. The Yanomami do not give up and underscore their resistance with the statement “Ya temi xoa.” Their usual answer to the question, “How are you?”, has become a battle cry. “We are still alive.”
We are grateful to have been able to make this film with Hutukara, and with Dario, Tuira and Davi Kopenawa and many other Yanomami. Hopefully their struggle can find even more supporters worldwide so that the heavens remain balanced, so that earth, air and water become healthy again and their world (and ours) do not perish.
